Premiering in Japanese theaters in 2017, Living in Deafblindness portrays a range of deafblind people living throughout Japan, and the community of supporters who help them maintain links to the larger world.
While focused on the lives of deafblind individuals, the film explores the ways we all are connected through various possibilities, and how we weave threads of hope through those connections.
People are not alone—aiming to capture these moments, the camera fixes its gaze on the relationships between people with deafblindness and those around them.
We hope that viewers will discover how the basics of how we live our lives are concentrated within the world of deafblindness.
ぼくの指に きみの指がふれたとき そこに言葉が生まれた
目が見えなくて耳が聞こえない人のことを、盲ろう者といいます。
盲ろうの人たちは、指で触れあうことで世界とつながっています。地域で支えあいながら暮らしている盲ろうの人たちを、全国各地に訪ねました。
この作品は盲ろう者の人たちをめぐる映画ですが、同時に人びとは誰も皆いろいろな可能性を持ってつながっていて、そのつながりの中から常に希望の糸を紡いで暮らしていることを伝えたいと思いました。人は独りではない＝その瞬間をつかまえるような撮影を目指して、盲ろう者と周囲の人たちとの関係性をまじろがずカメラで見つめました。『もうろうをいきる』は、そのような眼差しを持った映画です。
私たちが生きていくことの原点が、盲ろうという“障害”の中につまっていることを、この映画から発見してほしいと願っています。
