Takashi Nishihara

西原孝至

Takashi Nishihara (he/him) was born in 1983 in Toyama Prefecture, Japan. Nishihara studied at Waseda University, Graduate School of Arts and Video Journalism and has since worked as a film and television documentary director. He directs films that are often focused on civilian and grassroots activism amongst the young generation in Japan. In 2022, he founded his production company ML9 LLC.

His first feature documentary ABOUT MY LIBERTY (2016) premiered at Hot Docs. The film followed members of the student activist organization SEALDs, who were protesting against the government's push to reinterpret the Constitution. His most recent documentary feature ONE HUNDRED YEARS AND HOPE (2022), which followed young members of the Japanese Communist Party, had its international premiere at DMZ International Documentary Film Festival and its European Premiere at International Film Festival Rotterdam following a successful domestic release. His critical directing style is evident in his visual treatment of social issues such as human rights and gender equality.

He is a founding member of SAVE the CINEMA, which rallied for support for independent cinemas during the pandemic and worked alongside other cultural groups to support arthouse cinemas, independent cultural spaces and the arts.

1983年、富山県生まれ。早稲田大学で美術史と映像ジャーナリズムを専攻。TVドキュメンタリーの演出を経て、映画制作を開始。2022年に自身の制作プロダクション、ML9合同会社を設立。

16年、学生たちの社会運動を記録した劇場映画デビュー作『わたしの自由について』が、Hot Docs映画祭に出品され話題を呼ぶ。その後、『もうろうをいきる』(17)、『シスターフッド』(19)を発表。最新作『百年と希望』(22)は、ロッテルダム国際映画祭やDMZ国際ドキュメンタリー映画祭に正式出品。

SAVE the CINEMA、WeNeedCultureのメンバーとしてミニシアター・文化芸術分野への支援活動を行なっている。
